Demi Moore--Worthy of Love
Demi Moore confessed in the latest issue of Harper's BAZAAR magazine, "I would say that what scares me is that I’m gong to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I’m really not lovable, that I’m not worthy of being loved, that there’s something fundamentally wrong with me.” Demi has been the target for public scrutiny these last few months. Check any entertainment news website, and you'll find a plethora of heated comments about her divorce from Ashton Kutcher, her hospitalization and convulsions due to "exhaustion", her weight loss, plastic surgery, etc. What you won't find is a lot of grace.
Demi has the courage to admit to the stone-throwing public her fears and insecurities (probably identifiable to the stone-throwers themselves).
When I read Demi's words, my heart ached with compassion for her. Not pity. Not judgement. But compassion for a woman who longs to be loved unconditionally and fears that she is not worthy of such love.
If I could sit down with Demi Moore, I would tell her: "Oh Demi, thank you for sharing that. I think you articulated what most people feel but are afraid to admit outloud. A wise person once told me,'God made all people with the desire to be fully-known yet fully-loved and accepted at the same time.' I think your desires are perfectly natural. And your fears make sense because those who have vowed to love you have failed you. But God says, he loves you. It doesn't make sense why He would love us so much, but He tells us over and over again that He does. What makes Him different from all the others is that He never fails. God is Love. (1 John 4:8, 16) It is His nature. It is absolutely impossible for Him to not love or to stop loving. My favorite description of His love is such: 'God's love is a never-stopping, never-giving-up, unbreaking, always and forever love.'
But Demi, I have to be blunt with you...you're right in that you are not worthy of this love. Don't take it personally. I'm not worthy either. No one is. God's perfect and no one is perfect, so we're not worthy. Thankfully for us, He loves us enough to come up with a solution: "God demonstrates His own love for us, in while we were sinners, Christ died for us."
And that's what grace is. It's what no one else is giving you right now. 'For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. Not of yourself because of something you did. It is a gift from God.' (Eph. 2:8-9)
