Attitude of Gratitude--Our Thanksgiving Tree

So yep, we ripped off the Pottery Barn Kids idea, and made our own Thanksgiving tree. I had intended to write "Attitude of Gratitude" on the trunk and a scripture about giving thanks, but my current reality is that I plan a lot more things than I actually have time to execute, so once the girls hung the tree up, we called it a victory. We incorporated this activity into our daily "Circle Time" for home school.
I categorized each day to help the kids pinpoint different things, otherwise it would be "Mommy, Daddy and my stuffed Kitty" every day. Not sure how much Bubba comprehended the activity, as you'll get a chuckle from some of his answers.

Taste
Big Sister = candy
Little sister = apples
Bubba = acorns

Sound
Big sister = a friend's voice
Little sister = "Shhhh" because she likes to go to sleep
Bubba = cars

Smell
Big Sister = brownies
Little Sister = bananas
Bubba = bananas

Sight
Big Sister = Bubba's face when he's singing
Little Sister = stuffed animals
Bubba = Sissy

Touch
Big Sister--hugs
Little Sister--hugs
Bubba--I spy something blue


America:
Big Sister--that I have friends all over the country
Little Sister--lots of toys
Bubba--the sky

Something eternal:
Big Sister--the Bible
Little Sister--God's Holy Word
Bubba: Murphie, Jessie and Wesley

Something about Jesus:
Big Sister: That He lives in our hearts
Little Sister: That He changes hearts
Bubba: Thank you Jesus for Murphie, Jessie and Wesley


Something about Fall:
Big Sister--That I get to stay home for school
Little Sister--screen door and playing outside

Something from the weekend:
Big Sister--painting with Mommy
Little Sister--getting to stay up late and go to the college with Daddy
Bubba--Mommy, Daddy, Sisters


Since we have 2 November birthdays, we spent a day giving thanks for specific attributes of Big Sis and Bubba. Not wanting to leave out Little Sis, we spent a day celebrating her as well. Everyone in the family took turns saying things, I didn't keep track of who said what, but just wrote in a spiral on the leaf.

Big Sister: tender-hearted, gives lovin' (hugs), thoughtful, deep thinker, pretty face, loves Jesus and others, tells the truth, remembers every detail, artistic, "she shares her toys with me"

Little Sister: gives sweet snuggles, gives hugs unexpectedly, laughs a lot, beautiful blue eyes, precious voice, "that she loves me", "that she's Sissy", enthusiastic, funny, adorable freckles on her nose

During the month of February, we meditate and memorize the definition of love from 1 Cor. 13 (You know which ones I'm talking about--the wedding verses. Even Jim and Pam had them recited at their wedding). Our family needs refreshed in this, so it's nice to have this tradition to bring us back to it each year. We read and repeat the entire passage, but then focus on one element daily. "LOVE IS KIND" --today's focus. I asked the kids, "What does 'kind' mean?" Middle sister asked if she could give an example rather than a definition. With permission, she joyfully retrieved two stuffed animals and used them to demonstrate kindness by sharing. Brother and sister followed her lead and also acted out kind gestures between fluffy friends. "Very good," I affirmed them, "You obviously know what it is to be kind." Why Am I Here?

Journal entry from Sunday, November 15, 2015--after many weeks of being weary from sickness,  lonely for home, discouraged at not being able to accomplish basic things, and feeling pressures from the lack of my accomplishments. So I allowed the presence of Christ to refresh my spirit. You may recognize song lyrics and scriptures He brought to mind, which allowed me to dismiss the pressures and recenter myself in His purposes. I am here... to enter His gates with Thanksgiving in my heart, to enter His courts with praise to say "This is the day that the Lord has made! Baltimore

Picture from Joy105 blog I feel removed from the pulse of America while living abroad. Honestly, I rely on facebook posts for current events (one week, all I know that happened at home was debates about the color of a dress) ;), yet I can see a small but recognizable change in the posts about Baltimore compared with Ferguson posts: there are significantly LESS prejudiced remarks in my newsfeed, fewer quick and harsh judgements, more compassionate people speaking up. I don't know if that's just my experience?? Perhaps it's because during Ferguson, most of my circle of friends didn't know what to say, so said nothing. Just.like.me. Perhaps it's because a large majority of my facebook family truly walks with Jesus, not "religious rules" people, but people of deep relationship with the Creator of humanity who compels love for others , and they are now speaking with this sentiment:   "I still don't know what to say, but I am paying...
